This is how it feels for your students

A question from lesson 3. Pick an answer.

A share falls 50 percent. How much must it then rise to get back to the old price?

The lesson plan: three lessons of 50 minutes

For upper secondary, vocational and higher education. Everything works without an account.

Lesson 1. What is money, and why does it lose value?

Goal: Students can explain what inflation is and work out what it does to savings.

  1. 10 minDo the trial lesson together. Discuss the question most students got wrong.
  2. 10 minRead the page on inflation together. What does a sandwich cost now, and what did it cost when you were ten?
  3. 20 minIn pairs, use the calculator: 1,000 in savings, 10 years, first 2 percent and then 5 percent inflation.
  4. 10 minWrap up: who loses most when inflation is high, and why?

You use: Trial lesson (bitfox.online/en/learn/)Inflation (bitfox.online/en/glossary/inflation/)Inflation calculator (bitfox.online/en/tools/)

Homework: Explain inflation in three sentences to a younger brother or sister. Use your own worked example.

Lesson 2. Shares, ETFs and spreading risk

Goal: Students know what a share and an ETF are, and why spreading reduces risk without removing it.

  1. 10 minAsk: who has heard about buying shares? What do you know about it, and where did you hear it?
  2. 15 minIn groups, read the three term pages. Each group explains one term to the class.
  3. 15 minThought question: you have 100. Do you put it all in one company or spread it over 100? What happens if one company goes bust?
  4. 10 minWrap up: why does spreading not help when the whole market falls?

You use: Share (bitfox.online/en/glossary/share/)ETF (bitfox.online/en/glossary/etf/)Diversification (bitfox.online/en/glossary/diversification/)ETF guide (bitfox.online/en/news/what-is-an-etf/)

Homework: Look up one ETF and note the index it tracks and its ongoing costs (TER). You do not need to buy it; this is about reading and understanding.

Lesson 3. Falls, risk and the market game

Goal: Students understand that prices rise and fall, and that a 50 percent fall needs a 100 percent rise to recover.

  1. 10 minWith the calculator: how much must something rise after a 10, 30 and 50 percent fall? Let students guess first.
  2. 15 minRead the guide on falling markets and write down three causes.
  3. 20 minStudents aged 16 and over play the market game with play money. Younger students pick five companies on paper and follow them for a week on the Markets page.
  4. 5 minPlan for next week: who is where, and why?

You use: Drop calculator (bitfox.online/en/tools/)Guide on falls (bitfox.online/en/news/why-markets-fall/)Volatility (bitfox.online/en/glossary/volatility/)Market game (16+) (bitfox.online/en/game/)

Homework: Track your picks for a week. Write down what surprised you and what you would do differently. There is no right or wrong answer.

Students aged 16 and over earn a certificate

In the free Academy students take 36 short lessons in three levels. For every level they get a certificate in their name, to download or share. Great for a portfolio.
